About the workshop

OFTEN, I am asked how to loosen up in a painting and how to paint light. These are popular topics, and I love to marry a loose background with realistic flowers creating a contrast for the light to shine through. Painting florals and still life in the workshop, we become more impressionistic by simplifying our compositions and creating vignettes. This is an opportunity to paint multiple pieces during the four days.

Demonstrations of different techniques for you to incorporate into your paintings, throughout the four days of the workshop. Myths about watercolour will be busted as I have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.

We will be working from photographs and life. Plus I include composition strategies for a successful painting and incorporate values, expressive colour and other elements of design. Most importantly there will be plenty of painting time and one on one support for all.

This workshop covers:

• How to capture the effect of light

• Understanding and creating vignettes

• Working from photos and life

• Composition strategies

• Working on dry paper and building layers for depth

• Working wet in wet using expressive colour

• Working on damp paper for hours

• How to be more impressionistic with color

• Glazing as a tool

About the instructor

My work is anchored by the fragility in nature. Expressed through the fleeting colours of a landscape, the tender beauty of petals and the complex textures from nature’s architects.

Being a master of different mediums, it is my creative expression that dictates my choices. I work in watercolour, or charcoal or oils. Gently caressing them in many layers, creating depth and dimension within each painting. My colour palette has a base of 12 colours which can vary or be extended, depending on the subject.

Marney-Rose Edge is a Vancouver based artist. It is her true mastery that make her paintings come alive.

Although Edge is well known for her watercolours, oils and charcoal have become an important part of her creative process. Her subject matter over the years has included florals, nests, seascapes, animals, and landscapes. The subject suggests the choice of medium.

In 2024 she was selected to join the prestigious artist residency in France at Chateau Orquevaux for 2 weeks.

Marney-Rose has appeared on the cover of International Artist Magazine, with a 10 page feature article. Her work has been featured in the highly-acclaimed series of Splash books, The Best of Watercolour and Acrylic works, The Best of Acrylics, as well as receiving many other awards. In 2020 she was featured on Stella’s Studio, a television show out of Toronto.

She is a Signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, serving on the Board of Directors for several years. Edge is also a Signature member of the Society of Canadian Artists and a Signature member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour.
