CLIVE POWSEY ~ Life Drawing Intensive

About the workshop

Media: dry media and watercolour

Levels: confident beginner to advanced

This is a 5-day intensive course in observational drawing of the human figure which will provide students with reference material and ideas for future figurative drawing or painting in the studio. We'll start with a brief review of life drawing methods and techniques including gesture, contour, and the measuring of angles and proportions. We'll consider the differences between describing form with line and with light and shade. As well, we will look at the transition from drawing to painting and how that might be negotiated effectively. The course reviews some anatomy and invites students to consider the human form as animal in order to better comprehend the mechanics of what we are seeing and drawing. Usually when life drawing, we ask our models to assume poses that present a pleasing arrangement of body parts. We will try something quite different by first looking at slides from art history, film, theatre, and advertising and then have the model assume iconic and recurring poses in visual art, both sacred and secular. These poses include the sublime and the ridiculous, gods and mortals, saints and sinners, angels, demons, clowns, kings, despots, cover boys and girls. As well as individual poses we will look at compelling arrangements of figures.
